keurig versus french press

Recently my Keurig S-Slim single-serve k-cup coffee maker died. As much as I love my morning coffee, I love being financially sound even more! I decided to retire my useage of k-cups and opt for a french press and do a price comparison along the way.

Prices Using K-Cups

Keurig K-Slim: $129.99

Costco Donut Shop Coffee (online price): 46.99 for 100x

Assuming about 500 cups of coffee annually, the math is:

servings per day = 500/365 = 1.37

total annual cost = (129.99+46.99*5) = 364.94

cost per day = (129.99+46.99*5)/365 = 0.99

cost per coffee serving = (129.99+46.99*5)/500 = 0.73

Experiment - Proces Using French Press

I decided to start using a french press, electric kettle, and ground coffee beans.

French Press (1 liter): free (gift)

Costco Pete's ground coffee (32oz): $16.89

I approximately 25 grams per liter, which is a little on the light side. And a 1-liter french press makes 4 servings.

servings per bag = 907/25*4 = 145.12 servings

Assuming I make more coffee using a French Press and make a full liter each morning:

servings per day = 4

number of bags per year = 365/(907/25) = ~10

total annual cost = 10*16.89 = 168.9

cost per day = 168.9/365 = 0.46

cost per serving = 0.115

Overall, I find myself more likely to make a greater number of servings of coffee per day if I brew in increments of an entire 1-liter french press, which is inefficient if I only desire to consume 1-2 servings per morning. However, this is a useful corner case to identify and brewing coffee in smaller batches would result in less waste and improved cost per serving.

Overall, using a French press shows that I can reduce my cost per serving quite dramatically!

Hope you enjoyed the post and happy finances!
